KALI

Kali Designs was established in 2006 by Jacqui Walker. An Ilam Fine Arts graduate and freelance photographer, Jacqui has a passion for travel, particularly on the Indian sub-continent. Jacqui's interest in designing leather products developed during her frequent journeys to Kolkata, where she joined a Fair Trade Artisan Producer Group and travelled to remote villages to study the craft of Shantiniketan leather making, a method of traditional hand - embossed leather craft originating from West Bengal.  "I was captured and inspired by the talent and skill of these craftspeople and the intricate detail and beauty of their leatherwork. I decided this was the time to follow a dream and begin a new venture, creating my own designs to generate work for the local crafts people". Jacqui's designs depict a fusion of New Zealand and Indian cultures, incorporating stylised koru patterns and the colourful hand-tooled techniques of an ancient Indian craft.  Kali only employees fair trade manufacturers.
