Makunui Gardens Maple II Ecoprint
This beautiful botanical ecoprint is by New zealand artist Pilar Villamor. Pilar is fascinated by the natural environment as a tapestry for creativity and expression. The inspiration for this artwork comes from interweaving Hawaiian, Japanese and New Zealand cultures that permeate the rural Wairarapa homestead and gardens where this work was conceived and created.
This artwork is exclusively created with plants. No paint is used. The colours come from the pigments of natural leaves, flower petals and/or bark mixed with the chemistry of the watercolour paper and the mordants used to help the dyeing process. The technique used is called ecoprinting or botanical print. The paper is pre-treated with mordant and some leaves are also dipped into mordant. The plants are placed on the wet paper and all is wrapped into a bundle that keeps the plants well pressed against the paper. The buddle is placed into warm water for some time and then the best moment comes... the reveal! It is when the artist unwraps the bundle and finds out how much of the results was planned and how much is an unexpected gift from nature.
The flora and fauna used in this art piece are Japanese maple, feijoa, kapuka, acacia and agapanthus flower petals.
