JOHN BARR Wellington, NZ

John reclaims and repurposes old timbers to create functional art - combining edgy industrial elements that reflect the past. He has a deep respect for the environment and believes in the importance of preserving natural resources. John’s current work is created using reclaimed timbers from agricultural or industrial sources, and Wellington’s old wharves – particularly the recently restored Days Bay Wharf.

" I try to create functional art that is sympathetic with the past, with every bolt, wire, nail hole, and carpenter’s mark reflecting the story of the wood, the job it has done, and those whose skills have crafted, worked and shaped it. "

Each handcrafted item is unique and comes with its own story - a testament to John’s passion for working with wood to preserve a sense of history.
