This beautiful Bone hairstick has been carved by Amanda Thompson (Nga Puhi). The intricate Hammerhead design is first laser-cut onto both sides of the bone, then skilfully enhanced using a traditional tea-staining method to darken the engraved areas. This process results in a striking, detailed piece of taonga.

In Māori culture, the hammerhead shark (mangōpare) symbolises strength, courage, tenacity, and leadership. It represents a fighting spirit, determination, and resilience, as the shark must constantly swim to survive.
