A Whale Tail bone pendant carved by master carver Peter Mitchell.

In Māori culture, the whale tail (Muri Paraoa) represents protection, speed, strength, and good luck, often symbolising a safe journey or connection to the ocean. It reflects the whale’s significance as a guardian and the legendary arrival of the first Māori on a whale's back, often featuring in carvings as a respectful tribute to the sea and nature.

Master carver Peter Mitchell draws deeply from his European, Māori, and Pitcairn Island heritage. Based in traditional Māori craft, his work heavily features elements of the natural world and cultural storytelling, from the vital role of fishing to the flowing curves of the native koru (unfurling fern frond). Educated in Wellington, Peter’s early artistic development was shaped by a love for technical drawing. A builder by trade, he channels this precision and creative talent into sculpting high-quality bovine and whalebone pendants. His celebrated work has been featured in premier galleries and museums across New Zealand for over 30 years.
