Free-style machine embroidery is a technique Hesta has been exploring for many years and is now a defining element of a lot of her work. It is a rhythmic process like drawing with the needle, and is completely free-style, no automatic machine settings used.
Hesta uses natural fibers such as silk and linen as the base of her embroidery work, plus she uses a range of sewing threads to get the desired textural effects. Like drawing, it is the imagery that slowly appears that Hesta finds so satisfying. She loves the textural results of her embroidery, and the details that can be achieved with the layering of stitches and fabrics.
