This poi has been made with piu (cylindrical tags made of flax). The harakeke (flax) is picked and cut into sections, each section has one end of each length peeled to expose the flax fibre (muka) , and that fibre is then rolled by hand into cord, this process is called miro. They are bound together in bunches of around 16-20 tags and coloured strips of flax are added in.
Then the handles of the poi are extended with more muka, and rolled (miro) and plaited (whiri).
Then the tufted ends of each cord are bound on with more muka. These Poi piu are made with pre-european Māori methods and natural materials. The coloured parts are dyed using modern flax dyes.

Piu - the cylindrical tags of flax used in poi, and clothing such as rapaki (rain capes) and piu piu (wrap around kilt type skirt).

Stacey Moana Smith (Ngapuhi, Ngati Kahu) is a fibre artist particularly interested in muka (NZ flax fibre) and stone tools. She crafts korowai, poi, kete, and various types of cordage, using both muka and traditional stone tools. Her journey began when she learnt to make a piece of string from flax fibre. A moment that deepened her connection to natural materials and rural living. Living in such places allows her to easily get to know the taonga (treasures) of the natural environment.
