A Koru bone pendant carved by master carver Peter Mitchell.

Koru refers to the shoots of the silver fern. The circular movement to the inner core refers to "going back to the beginnings". The unfurling frond itself is symbolic for new life, new beginnings, hope, personal growth, purity nurturing, a new phase in life, the spirit of rejuvenation and peace.

Master carver Peter Mitchell draws deeply from his European, Māori, and Pitcairn Island heritage. Based in traditional Māori craft, his work heavily features elements of the natural world and cultural storytelling, from the vital role of fishing to the flowing curves of the native koru (unfurling fern frond). Educated in Wellington, Peter’s early artistic development was shaped by a love for technical drawing. A builder by trade, he channels this precision and creative talent into sculpting high-quality bovine and whalebone pendants. His celebrated work has been featured in premier galleries and museums across New Zealand for over 30 years.
