Crafted from raupo (bullrushes) using pre-European Māori methods and all-natural materials, these traditional round poi are known as poi raupo.

Poi - a percussive instrument used in waiata (song performance), also for training dexterity and co-ordination in the arms and wrists. Poi were formally used by men, to train with but now are used mostly by women in kapa haka performance, but there are very adept poi performers of all genders.

Stacey Moana Smith (Ngapuhi, Ngati Kahu) is a fibre artist particularly interested in muka (NZ flax fibre) and stone tools. She crafts korowai, poi, kete, and various types of cordage, using both muka and traditional stone tools. Her journey began when she learnt to make a piece of string from flax fibre. A moment that deepened her connection to natural materials and rural living. Living in such places allows her to easily get to know the taonga (treasures) of the natural environment. She often uses flax, feathers, wood, and bark for making dyes, and is committed to using traditional Māori methods and tools throughout the entire artistic process.
