'Kōkako and Kohekohe' is an artwork of one of New Zealand’s rare native birds - the North Island kōkako - a bird fondly known for its incredible, haunting song that echoes through the forest. They are often heard singing their duets at dawn and dusk from a high perch, with their sounds resembling that of an organ or flute. The wattles of the North Island kōkako are blue, while the South Island kōkako (thought to be extinct) are orange. They are not very strong fliers and only glide short distances as they predominately move through the canopy using their strong legs, bounding from tree to tree. Hannah photographed a bird named ‘Kahurangi’ for this artwork - the special female kōkako at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre - where they have done incredible work to help the species. After introducing kōkako there in 2007 and working extensively on predator control and forest regeneration, they have now counted 40 pairs and 20 individuals that live on the mountain where they’re based in the Wairarapa (Wellington region). Hannah has drawn the kōkako on a blooming kohekohe, as it is a tree they like to feed on.
