This ceramic kōtare mug features a hand-painted underglaze design carved into the clay in a block-print style, and is paired with a lovely green glaze. The kōtare is left unglazed, creating a tactile, contrasting texture to hold. Handcrafted by Andi Hoffmann.

Known as the sacred kingfisher in English, the kōtare is a striking native bird of Aotearoa New Zealand, instantly recognizable by its brilliant turquoise-blue plumage, bold black eye-stripe, and heavy bill. Often seen perched patiently on branches or power lines waiting for prey, the vigilant kōtare is a treasured part of local coastal and forest landscapes.
