This beautiful Double headed Manaia pounamu (greenstone) pendant has been hand carved by Nick from Kawakawa Stone, in Whanganui, New Zealand.

The Manaia is a mythological creature in Maori culture and is a symbol of protection. It is usually depicted as having the head of a bird and the tail of a fish and the body of a man, though it is sometimes depicted as a bird, a serpent, or a human figure in profile. The bird stood for the domain of the Manaia in the skies, the human, for its power on earth and the fishtail, represented its protection and domain on the sea. Such a wide range strengthened the idea of the Manaia offering its protection wherever Maori went.
