This table lamp has been created from an old carpenter's block plane made by Alex. Mathieson & Son, a company established in Glasgow in the early 19th Century and producing quality woodworking tools for well over 100 years.

Alexander Mathieson was a master sharp edge tool maker based in Glasgow. From 1849 he worked with his son Thomas who was based in Edinburgh and from then on the firm marked all its tools Alex Mathieson & son Glasgow & Edinburgh.

This plane is a 14 inch (36cm) Technical Jack Plane with a half ’tote’ or handle. The Mathieson brand is incorporated into the steel and is still visible on the cutting blade. It is also stamped into the toe of the wood block and on the remnants of a brand sticker on the wood. Planes of this type were often used by apprentices.

An Edison bulb is supplied and the lamp comes with its own written story including the source and history of the timber.
