This stunning Toki Bone pendant has been carved by Amanda Thompson (Nga Puhi). The intricate Hammerhead and Koru design is first laser cut onto the bone, then skillfully enhanced using ink to darken the engraved areas.

In Māori culture, the hammerhead shark (mangōpare) symbolises strength, courage, tenacity, and leadership. It represents a fighting spirit, determination, and resilience, as the shark must constantly swim to survive.

The koru is commonly used in Māori art and signifies growth, family, friendship and our path through life. This is because as the koru grows it unfurls new fronds to continue expanding, this can be new family members, new friendships or new adventures that we experience in our lives.  

The Hei Toki Blade is a culturally significant symbol within the Māori culture, representing courage and strength, particularly in times of difficulty. These blades were carved to be used as chisel tools for the practice of Whakairo (traditional wood carving), to craft Marae (meeting houses) and Waka (canoes). Hei Toki pendants were also worn by Māori elders to symbolise power, wisdom and authority.
