A lovely Pania of the reef sculpture crafted by New Zealand artist Messini Palace.

In Māori mythology Pania was a beautiful wahine mermaid who lived off the coast of Napier. She and Karitoki, the son of a chief, fell in love and would meet at night but Pania would return to her ocean people by day. When Karitoki tried to keep her on land she vanished back to the ocean never to be seen again. Her Statue has sat on the City of Napiers Marine Parade since 1954 and she has become iconic in Aotearoa folklore.
